Game 1 Game
2
One day after the Ashland University softball
pitching staff paved the way for a doubleheader sweep, the Eagle
offensive attack took center stage against Lake Superior State on
Sunday (Apr. 10). AU tallied 10 extra base hits and 17 runs in the
two victories at Brookside Park.
Every Eagle starter recorded at least one base
hit in a 9-2 triumph in the opener. In game two, Sara Mathes
and Angie Westenkirchner each clubbed a home run and
combined for seven RBIs in AUs 8-0, 5-inning triumph.
Ashland, which has now won five straight
contests, is 23-13 overall and 6-4 in Great Lakes Intercollegiate
Athletic Conference (GLIAC) play. Lake Superior State falls to
6-19 overall and 1-7 in conference games.
In the first game, Ashland scored a pair of
runs in the second, third and fourth innings to give Jaime
Williams more than enough run support.
Williams, whose lone blemish was a two-run home
run by Laker first baseman Emily Bell in the sixth inning, pitched
a complete game five-hitter. She struck out 11 batters and walked
just one, improving to 14-5. Cherish Samuels took the loss for
Lake Superior State, falling to 2-10.
Offensively, Kristen McGaughey had a
pair of doubles and finished the day 2-for-3 with two runs scored.
Ashley Mayle was 2-for-4 with a pair of runs scored.
Mathes was the third Eagle to notch a pair of safeties, finishing
the game 2-for-3. Nicole Placie had a two-run double,
while Abby Wuthrick and Amanda Thomas each crossed home
twice.
In the second game, Ashland received all of its
offense in the third and fourth innings.
Kelli Williams plated Mayle with an RBI
single to open the scoring in the third. Westenkirchner followed
with a three-run homer over the right-center field fence.
The following inning, the Eagles loaded the
bases for Mathes, who proceeded to clear them with a shot over the
left-center field fence. The home run was Mathes team-high
fifth of the season.
Mathes finished the game 2-for-4. Mayle wad
3-for-4 with a pair of runs scored.
Sarah Holets yielded just one hit while
working all five innings and recording her first career shutout.
She is now 4-3. Lake Superior State hurler Stephanie Reveley took
the loss and is now 3-5.
AU will be back in action Wednesday afternoon
(Apr. 13) at Tiffin (17-11). The doubleheader will get underway at
