Ferris State pitchers Rachel Chartier and Jenna Thiede gave the Ashland University softball team a close look at a different kind of Arctic Blast.

In January, AU hosts that event, which features ice carving and ice sculptures. Saturday (April 23) in Big Rapids, MI, the two FSU pitchers put the AU offense in a deep freeze, allowing one run and eight hits in 14 innings as the Bulldogs swept the Eagles, 7-1 and 2-0.

Ashland is 27-15, 8-6 in Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action. The Bulldogs are 22-16 and 11-5 in the conference.

Chartier upped her record to 11-8 with a route-going effort in the first game. She allowed four hits, walked two and struck out four. FSU had a 3-0 lead after two innings and put the game away with four more runs in the fifth inning. Leadoff hitter Melissa Worsley was 4-for-4 with three runs scored and three RBI for FSU. That total included her third homer of the season.

No AU player had more than one hit. AU hurt itself with three errors. The loss went to Jaime Williams, who gave up three runs, all earned, in three innings. Williams was touched for four hits. Jennifer Alderson pitched the final three frames and allowed four runs, none earned, on five hits.

In the second game, FSU pushed across two runs in the fourth inning and that was all Thiede needed. She hurled a four-hitter in improving her record to 9-5. Thiede didn’t issue a free pass and she struck out four. Williams (17-7) took the loss. In six innings, she allowed two runs, one earned, on six hits. Williams walked two and struck out 13.

In the fourth inning, FSU used a pair of doubles and an AU error to score. Allison McKibbin and Laura Crower had the doubles and Crower drove in a run. Katie Kraai had a pair of hits for FSU.

Kelli Williams went 2-for-3 with a double for the Eagles.

Ashland is scheduled to play on Wednesday (April 27) at home against Northern Kentucky. That twinbill begins at 3:30 p.m.
