Not only are the Ashland University Eagles seeing double, they are also seeing red.

For the second time this season, the AU baseball team dropped a doubleheader to Wayne State. Wednesday (April 27) in Detroit, WSU stopped the Eagles, 5-1 and 5-2. WSU pitchers Kyle Hill and Rick Mosher pitched complete game wins over AU for the second time this season. Earlier in the year, the two came to Ashland and led the Warriors to a sweep.

WSU is 26-10, 14-3 in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. Ashland is 25-15, 6-6 in the GLIAC.

Hill (8-1) shut down the Eagles on a run and eight hits in the first game. The righthander struck out four and didn’t walk a batter. WSU gave him all the runs he needed early, the Warriors scored three times in the bottom of the first inning.

First baseman Jon Weisman went 1-for-3 with three RBI to pace the home team. Weisman clubbed his seventh homer of the season. Shortstop Frank Jeney and Kurt Kieleszewski had two hits each.

David Waters, Ray Frisbee and Adam Wilson had two hits apiece for the Eagles. Each player ripped a double. Wilson drove in AU’s lone run.

The loss went to sophomore Josh Davidson (4-4). He pitched a complete game and allowed eight hits. Davidson walked one and struck out three.

The Warriors got out in front early in the second game, scoring all five of their runs in the first inning. That offensive flurry came against senior righty Todd Martinelli (3-5). Martinelli pitched six innings and allowed eight hits. He walked one and struck out six.

Mosher (7-1) limited the Eagles to a pair of runs on seven hits. Unlike the game he pitched in Ashland his control wasn’t as fine this time. Mosher walked five and struck out four.

Weisman drove in a pair of runs while Jeney and second baseman Bobby Marten each went 2-for-3.

Wilson went 2-for-3 with two RBI. Shortstop Jim Barry was also 2-for-3.

Ashland will host Gannon in a four-game series this coming weekend (April 30-May 1).
