“Better Late Than Never,” is a good way to describe Grand Valley State’s run to the 2005 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference women’s golf championship.

Friday (April 29) at the Country Club of Ashland, the Lakers won the crown with a team score of 612. That score easily led a field of six teams. The GLIAC tournament was supposed to be played last weekend, but a mix of snow and rain in Ashland pushed the event back a week.

Nothing, however, could rain on the GVSU parade. The Lakers’ Melissa Sneller was the medalist with a score of 147. Elena Robles of Ferris State was second at 149.

FSU finished second in the team standings at 621. Northwood (692) was third, Findlay (711) was fourth, Ashland (713) was fifth and Gannon (730) placed sixth. Mercyhurst had three golfers compete, but didn’t figure in the team standings.

Ashland’s best performance was turned in by Maggie Slonkosky. She finished 11th at 174. Meghan Marks shot 178 and finished 19th.
