It was Youth Day at Donges Field Saturday (April 30) when the Ashland University baseball team hosted Gannon. The 40-plus youngsters who came out for Saturday’s Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference twinbill had the opportunity to see the Eagles put on a clinic and they got to see just about every offensive play imaginable.

AU took two games from Gannon, winning the opener, 12-6 and adding a 20-1 triumph in the second game. These were the first two games in a four-game series. The two teams will play another doubleheader Sunday (May 1), beginning at noon.

The Eagles (27-15/8-6 GLIAC) put the first game away with a run in the first inning and seven runs in the second. AU had 13 hits against GU pitchers Gary Watson (1-4) and Joe Grack. Troy Reeder blasted his team-high fifth homer and drove in three runs. David Waters, Ron Oneson, Ray Frisbee, Josh Davidson and Casey Jirsa had two hits apiece. All of those players except Waters had a double.

Ryan Petrich hurled his first complete game of the year to pick up the win. Petrich, now 7-1, was touched for six runs, all earned, on nine hits. He walked three and struck out three.

Chris Miller and Kirk Reynolds had two hits each for the Knights (6-31/3-18).

In the second game, Jirsa nearly hit for the cycle. The sophomore third baseman lacked only a homer for earning that honor. He drove in six runs and helped the Eagles jump out in front, 12-1 after two innings. Jirsa was 4-for-5. Waters was 3-for-3 with three RBI and Oneson and Reeder added two hits apiece. Freshman Chase Beatty came off the bench to add a three-run double.

Freshman righty Thom Abbott (2-0) pitched the first six innings to record the win. He allowed one run on five hits with a walk and six strikeouts. Bob Ohmer (1-4) started and took the loss for GU. He lasted two innings.

Catcher Sean Lysowski was the only Gannon player with more than one hit. He was 2-for-3.
