Batman is returning to the big screen this summer. The Batmen of Ashland would seem to have made an early return this spring.

Sunday (May 1) at Donges Field in the final home games of the season, the Ashland University baseball team completed a four-game sweep of Gannon with a pair of convincing wins, 13-0 and 11-4. AU is 29-15, 10-6 in Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play. The Golden Knights are 6-33 and 3-20 in the league.

AU had a total of 26 hits in Sunday’s two games. The Eagles banged out five triples in the first game. Ashland broke open that game by scoring nine times in the third inning. That frame included seven AU hits and four Gannon errors.

Second baseman Adam Wilson was 3-for-3 with a triple and three RBI. Pitcher Josh Davidson had a double and triple, he finished 2-for-3 and drove home three runs. Allen Ayers, hitting out of the leadoff spot, had a pair of doubles.

Davidson upped his record to 5-4 by going five innings and allowing one hit. He walked two and struck out six. Dan McGinnis worked two scoreless innings to close out the win.

Matt Berkey (2-6) took the loss. He lasted 2 2/3 innings and allowed 10 runs, three earned. Shortstop Josh Dziomba had both of Gannon’s hits.

The second game featured an inside-the-park homer by Wilson. Wilson’s blast came to center field and chased home three runs. The senior second baseman went 2-for-4 and had four RBI in the second game. Left fielder Troy Reeder was 3-for-4 with a double, triple and two RBI. Center fielder David Waters was 3-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored. Ayers and freshman catcher Chase Beatty had two hits apiece. AU had six extra-base hits in the nightcap.

Senior Todd Martinelli, in his final appearance at Donges Field, went six innings to get the win. He’s 4-5. Against Gannon he allowed three runs, all earned, on nine hits. He didn’t walk a batter and whiffed five. Lefty Matt Patton handled the seventh inning and was touched for one unearned run.

Dziomba was 2-for-3 with a homer and two RBI for the Golden Knights. Designated hitter Bill Caldwell and catcher Sean Lysowski also has two hits apiece for GU.

Ricky Hulsinger (0-2) went the distance and took the loss.
