Three Ashland University softball
players were named to the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic
Conference first team on Friday (May 6). The team was selected by
the leagues coaches.
Ashlands first team selections are
sophomore utility player Bree Beabout (Powell, OH/Olentangy),
junior outfielder Ashley Mayle (Louisville, OH) and
sophomore pitcher Jaime Williams (Albertville, AL). This
is the second consecutive year Beabout has earned first team
all-conference honors. Mayle was a second team choice last season.
This is the first time Williams has earned All-GLIAC plaudits.
Beabout had a team-high .313 batting average
and also led the Eagles in slugging percentage (.461) and runs
(22). She had three homers and 14 RBI.
Mayle was second on the team in batting average
(.307). She paced the team in hits (42), doubles (11) and stolen
bases (11-14). She began the year playing center field and when
injuries decimated the Eagles at shortstop, she moved into the
infield and played well there.
Williams established herself as one of the
GLIACs top pitchers. She finished 17-13 with a 1.41 ERA.
Williams struck out 243 batters in 209 innings. Opposing batters
hit just .203 against her. Williams had 24 complete games and that
ties her for the third highest single-season total in school
history. Her innings pitched total is the second highest season
total at AU and her strikeout figure is the fifth best at AU.
The Eagles had a pair of second team All-GLIAC
honorees senior designated player Sara Mathes
(Massillon, OH/Jackson) and senior catcher Nicole Placie
(Cridersville, OH/Wapakoneta).
A year ago Mathes was named first team
All-GLIAC. This year she hit .256 and led the club in homers (5)
and RBI (20).
Placie hit .253 with two homers and 14 RBI. She
appeared in all 50 games the Eagles played in 2005, most of those
behind the plate.
Two AU freshmen Angie
Westernkirchner (Maumee, OH) and Kelli Williams (Celina,
OH) were named to the GLIAC honorable mention list.
Westernkirchner is a first baseman who hit .273 in 38 games. She
homered twice.
Williams hit .292 with three homers and 14 RBI.
She had the highest on-base percentage (.390) on the team.
Ashland finished the year 27-23, 8-12 in the
GLIAC.
