Its the final weekend of the
regular season, but it doesnt appear as if fatigue is a
problem for Ashland University pitchers Josh Davidson and
Todd Martinelli.
The two righthanders silenced the Findlay
Oilers Saturday (May 7) in Findlay as the Eagles opened a
four-game series with the Oilers with a pair of 4-1 wins. Maybe
what the Oilers need is Geritol, not water or Gatorade. Both
Davidson and Martinelli twirled six-hitters in helping the Eagles
improve to 31-15, 12-6 in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic
Conference.
Davidson won the opener, striking out eight and
walking one. The sophomore is 6-4. The Oilers got to him for a run
in the fifth inning, but by that time AU was in front, 3-0.
Sophomore first baseman Ron Oneson was 2-for-4 and drove
in one run. Freshman catcher Chase Beatty was 2-for-3 with
an RBI. Beatty scored three runs. The other AU run was driven in
by junior outfielder David Waters.
Findlay (20-23/13-13 GLIAC) got a strong mound
performance from Chris Antonides (3-4). He allowed seven hits, but
was hurt by a defense that was guilty of six errors. Two of the
four runs Antonides allowed were unearned. Like Davidson, he
pitched a complete game.
Martinelli walked three and whiffed two in
evening his record at 5-5. AU led 2-1 after three innings and gave
the senior two more runs in the fourth. Waters had two RBI. Beatty
was 2-for-3 and senior outfielder Allen Ayers went 2-for-4
and plated a run.
Scott Kromer (2-5) took the loss. In seven
innings he allowed four runs, all earned, on eight hits. He walked
two and struck out two. Second baseman Ken Beamer went 2-for-3 to
pace the Oilers.
Ashland and Findlay finish the regular season
with another doubleheader on Sunday (May 8) in Findlay. The first
game begins at 1 p.m.
