Young children are always taught to stay away from fire. The Ashland University basketball team tried to do that, but unfortunately had no choice but to play with fire.

Saturday (Nov. 19) at Kates Gymnasium, the Saint Joseph’s Pumas blazed away from start to finish in a 110-87 win over the Eagles.

The loss was Ashland’s first of the season. The Eagles are 2-1 and head to Fort Myers, FL, next week for a pair of game. That begins a streak of five consecutive road games for AU.

Saturday, Rashad McSwine scored 23 points, one of three Saint Joseph’s players to score 20 or more points. McSwine hit 9-of-12 shots from the field for the Pumas (3-0), who shot 58.9 percent (43-73) from the floor. Sullivan Sykes added 22 points and Derek Fey had 20 points for Saint Joseph’s.

The Pumas were equally effective from inside and outside. They shot 56.5 percent (13-23) from three-point range and enjoyed a 48-34 edge in points in the paint. SJC was red hot from start to finish. The visitors shot 56.8 percent in the first half and 61.1 percent in the second half. The Pumas outrebounded AU, 36-32.

Senior center Justin Brown had 18 points and nine rebounds to pace Ashland. Both of those figures led the Eagles. Junior forward Greg Emmons had 15 points, junior guard-forward Vahn Knight had 13 points and sophomore guard Brett Barlett had 12 points.

Ashland trailed, 55-45 at halftime. That deficit grew quickly, the Pumas were in front, 71-49 four minutes into the second half.
