The Ashland University men’s indoor track and field team is ranked first in the country in this week’s NCAA Division II Track and Field/Cross Country Coaches Association national poll.

The AU men have a total of 256.24 rating points this week. That’s enough to nip Central Missouri State (255.84) which is in second place. Grand Valley State (252.47) is ranked third.

The AU women are also ranked among the nation’s elite. The Eagle women are ranked fifth this week with 236.63 points. Grand Valley State (261.39) is the top women’s team in the country.

“I’m especially proud of Jud Logan and his staff for their accomplishments under unique conditions,” said AU director of athletics Bill Goldring. “He and the student-athletes have really rallied and deserve all the positive accolades that have come their way. Like the fall, we’re having an extremely good winter and I’m proud of our coaches and student-athletes and they way they’ve conducted themselves and run their program. It’s a real positive for Ashland University and our athletic program.”

The good news from track and field is the latest in a winter that’s been filled with success for AU teams. A summary of the on-going winter season can be found below.

  • Men’s Basketball – The Eagles are 18-8 and are in second place in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference South Division. For the first time in the program’s history, AU will host a first-round GLIAC playoff game this coming Tuesday (Feb. 28, 7:30 p.m.). AU has been in the region rankings for much of this year and has been ranked as high as 25th in the NCAA national poll. This week, the Eagles are included among the “Others Receiving Votes,” in the national poll.
  • Women’s Basketball – AU is ranked eighth in this week’s regional rankings. If the season ended today, the Eagles would be included in the NCAA playoffs for the second time in three years. This is the third consecutive year AU has hosted a GLIAC first-round playoff game (Tuesday, Feb. 28, 5:30 p.m.). AU is the only women’s team to host a first-round postseason game each of the last three years. The Eagles, who are 18-9, are in first place in the GLIAC South Division. Ashland has won three consecutive division titles and has claimed the division title four of the last five years.
  • Wrestling – The Eagles are ranked seventh in this week’s NCAA Division II national poll. AU is the defending regional champion. This coming weekend, the Eagles will venture to Carson-Newman (TN) for the regional championships. Six individual AU wrestlers are nationally ranked.
  • Swimming – Junior Omar Fathallah won the 50 freestyle at the recent GLIAC championships. In winning that race, Fathallah set a pool record at Northern Michigan. Fathallah will appear at the NCAA championships for the second consecutive year.
