Denny’s is open 24 hours. The same thing can be said for the attack of the Ashland University baseball team.

Thanks to a six-run explosion in the seventh inning of the second game Thursday (April 13), the Eagles gained a split at Hillsdale.

That outburst in the latter stages of the second game gave AU (28-8, 9-3 GLIAC) a 6-5 triumph. In the first game, the Chargers upended the Eagles, 4-3.

Justin Randall, Jim Barry and Casey Jirsa had two hits apiece in the first game to pace the Eagles. Barry and Randall both doubled. Ashland outhit the Chargers, 10-7, but stranded eight runners.

Senior lefty Ryan Douglas started and took his first loss of the season. In five innings, he allowed four runs on six hits. Douglas (2-1) walked two and struck out three. Thom Abbott pitched one inning of scoreless relief.

Kyle Wade and Mike Sypniewski went 2-for-3 for the Chargers. Nate Chucta drove in a pair of runs. The win went to Dennis Czuchaj, who lasted five innings and allowed two runs on seven hits.

In the second game, the Chargers scored once in the first inning and added two runs in the fifth and two more in the sixth. AU’s seventh-inning rally made a winner of Jim Barry, who pitched six innings. Barry (7-2) allowed five runs on 11 hits. He didn’t walk a batter and struck out two. Josh Davidson got his second save of the season by pitching a scoreless seventh inning.

Third baseman John Hosgood went 2-for-4 with a homer and two RBI. Randall and Davidson both went 2-for-3.

Hillsdale was paced by Jeff Dubey who was 2-for-3 with two RBI and Wade, who finished 2-for-4 with two RBI.
