Not since Tom Sawyer has whitewashing been a topic like it was Wednesday (April 26) at Ashland University’s Donges Field.

Tom’s assignment was to whitewash a picket fence. Ryan Douglas and Todd Schlenkerman were asked to whitewash a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference foe and neither one needed a drop cloth.

Douglas, a senior lefty, blanked Hillsdale, 7-0 in the first game of Wednesday’s GLIAC twinbill. Schlenkerman, a freshman righthander, silenced the Chargers, 8-0 in the nightcap. The shutouts are the first of the year for the Eagles.

The wins give Ashland, ranked third in the North Central Region, a 38-10 record, 19-5 in league action. The Chargers are 14-24 and 5-17. AU won three of four games against Hillsdale this season.

In seven innings, Douglas (4-1) was touched for five hits. He walked one and struck out nine. The Eagles gave him all the support he needed by chipping away at HC’s Andy Lovell (5-5). AU scored single runs in the first, second, fourth and fifth innings. The icing on the cake came in the sixth when AU crossed home plate three times.

Outfielder David Waters was 2-for-3 and drove in a pair of runs. Shortstop Jim Barry and catcher Ray Frisbee both went 2-for-3.

Larry Jacques was 2-for-3 for the Chargers.

Schlenkerman (6-0) didn’t have pinpoint command all afternoon, but every time he needed to escape a jam, he was equal to the task. The rookie gave up four hits and walked four in five innings. He struck out three. Justin Richards pitched the final two innings and didn’t allow a hit or run.

AU scored three runs in each of the first two innings. The Eagles grabbed the lead in the first on a three-run homer to right field by second baseman Justin Randall. In the second inning, AU scored three runs on one hit. HC starter and loser Josh Lehmkuhl (0-5) hit three batters in the second inning and in his 1.1 innings, hit four batters. He was charged with six runs – two earned. The Chargers committed three errors behind him.

AU collected six hits and only Randall, who went 2-for-3, had more than one hit. Third baseman John Hosgood clubbed his fifth homer of the season. Randall has two roundtrippers.

Kyle Wade and Dennis Czuchaj both had two hits for the Chargers.

Ashland will host a four-game series against Findlay this weekend (April 29-30). Saturday’s doubleheader with the Oilers begins at 1 p.m.
