Ashland University junior second baseman Justin Randall (Sarnia, ONT/St. Clair County C.C.) has been selected as the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference player of the year. The junior was selected by a vote of the GLIAC coaches.

Randall is one of three AU players to earn first-team all-conference honors. He’s joined on the first unit by junior pitcher Josh Davidson (Lexington, OH) and junior outfielder Casey Jirsa (Tallmadge, OH).

Ashland’s second team selections are junior designated hitter John Hosgood (Powell, OH/Worthington Kilbourne) and senior outfielder David Waters (West Salem, OH/Wadsworth).

Senior shortstop-pitcher Jim Barry (Mentor, OH) and catcher Eric Zattlin (Grand Haven, MI/Muskegon C.C.), a junior, were named to the honorable mention list.

This is Randall’s first year at AU and it hasn’t taken long for the word to spread about his accomplishments as a hitter. The junior is the GLIAC leader in hits (85) and RBI (57). He’s second in batting average (.429) and doubles (18) and third in total bases (113).

Jirsa is the GLIAC leader in total bases (121), doubles (21) and hit by pitch (14). He’s hitting .426 with six homers and 46 RBI.

Davidson is tied for the lead in the country in wins (13-4). The righthander leads the conference in wins, innings pitched (92) and strikeouts (85). In 2004, Davidson was the GLIAC freshman of the year and last season, he was a GLIAC honorable mention selection.

Hosgood is swinging at a .370 clip with five homers and 31 RBI. Waters, a first team All-GLIAC pick last season, is hitting .369. He is the GLIAC leader in runs (63) and is fifth in hits (69) and total bases (101).

Barry is hitting .361. He’s knocked in 34 runs and is 9-for-9 in stolen base attempts. On the mound, he’s 8-3 with a 4.05 ERA. Barry’s logged 60 innings.

This is Zattlin’s first season at Ashland. Even though he’s been derailed by injury the past several weeks, the junior backstop has hit .294 in 32 games. He has one homer and 21 RBI.

Ashland is 42-14, 23-9 in GLIAC play. The Eagles finished the regular season second in the conference. They are ranked third in the region. The NCAA Division II regional playoff field will be announced on May 15. The top six teams in the region advance to the postseason.
