Extension Cords

The Office of Residence Life has been notified that there is an extension cord available that meets fire safety standards for Ashland University.  The specific cord is from First Alert and is called "Safety Extension Cord, Fire Shield Protected."  It comes in a variety of lengths.  If you would like to see a sample of this cord, please talk with your resident assistant or come to the Office of Residence Life.

At this time, students are permitted to use that type of cord under the following guidelines:

  1. Students may have a maximum of one (1) cord per resident in any given room;
  2. Refrigerators may not be plugged into one (and must be plugged directly into the wall);
  3. Two Safety Extension Cords may not be plugged in to each other (making one longer cord); and
  4. Power strips or surge protectors may not be plugged in to a Safety Extension Cord.

Please understand that these guidelines are set for safety reasons, keeping in mind the limitations of the wiring in our residence halls.

Also note at this time this is the ONLY extension cord allowed.  If you find a different brand that you believe is comparable to this product, please let us know so that our fire safety experts can assess the item and respond accordingly.
