How did you find out about your internship?

Last summer, I researched historical societies in my area and contacted the director of the museum that I had the most interest in to see if they had an internship position available. After working as the intern last year and enjoying the experience so much, I reapplied and was accepted as this year’s summer intern.

How long did it take you to secure the internship position?

I secured the position after first interviewing with director and then meeting with the board of the museum; they approved me as their summer intern at that very meeting.

Did the Career Development Center help you in acquiring the internship? If so, please explain how.

The Career Development Center helped me in securing this internship because they helped to review my resume and cover letter on a number of occasions. I also have done mock interviews with the CDC and would highly recommend their services for anyone competing for an internship or job.

Describe your responsibilities within your internship.

I was responsible for curator duties, contributing to archival research, executing educational programs, creating display layouts, updating inventory, expanding our membership base, coordinating special events and regular tours, and attending board meetings.

List three to five highlights from your internship.

  1. Listening to locals talk about their joyful experiences at the Buckeye Lake State Park in its glory days.
  2. Conducting tours on Buckeye Lake and the Cranberry Bog National Nature Preserve.
  3. Teaching today’s youth about their heritage on their school field trips to the museum and lake.
  4. Gaining valuable skills and contacts for future experiences and opportunities.

What is one aspect of your internship that you would have wanted to change?

I would have liked the museum to be open longer so I could have spent more time there. I also would have liked to conduct even more lake and bog tours than what I already did because you are able to interact more with the public on those events than in the museum itself.

Did your internship confirm your anticipated career choice or path?

Absolutely, as I plan to be a teacher after graduation. I especially enjoyed preparing and presenting educational programs for younger and older groups alike that were interactive and allowed for personal discovery alongside formal instruction. It really gave me valuable experience for my future career in history education.

Now that you have completed an internship, what advice would you give students about internships?

I would advise all students to actively pursue an internship position after careful preparation of your resume and cover letter, which the CDC can help you with. Internships teach you valuable skills and knowledge within your field, improve upon your current abilities, allow you to meet new people, and help you grow as an individual, both professionally and personally.
