Bio

Dr. Theodore A. Avtgis is a professor and chair of the Department of Communication Studies. Professor Avtgis’ research includes organizational communication, medical communication, risk and crisis communication and aggressive communication. He received his Ph.D. from Kent State University in 1999 and has served on the faculty of St. John’s University, West Virginia University and University of Akron. Dr. Avtgis serves as a consultant in risk and medical communication. His research with medical professionals and first responders has earned an appointment as adjunct professor in the department of surgery, School of Medicine at West Virginia University. He has published over 55 peer-reviewed articles and book chapters, and has presented over 115 conference papers. He was recognized as one of the most prolific researchers in the field of communication studies between the years of 1996-2001. He has written nine books on a variety of topics including organizational communication, medical communication, communication theory and aggressive communication. He is passionate about research and gets his students involved in many different research opportunities. Avtgis has also been honored as a Centennial Scholar, Distinguished Scholar, Research Fellow and Recipient of the Past President’s Award by the Eastern Communication Association. He currently is the editor in chief of the scholarly journal Communication Research Reports and is president-elect of the Ohio Communication Association.

Professor Avtgis has taught dozens of different communication courses at both the undergraduate and graduate levels in institutions that include Kent State University, University of Akron, West Virginia University and St. John’s University among others. He is passionate about educating the next generation of communication scholars and brings that passion into the classroom. Avtgis states: “I love my students! We have developed a culture of scholarship that is infectious. Our students are actively engaged in research and it is such a wonderful site to see. We only have four years in which to provide them with the theory and research skills that will guide them into the next 40+ years of their careers. I see them as my intellectual children and I want to make sure that I give them everything I can to ensure that they succeed. It is my job to make them excellent.”
