College of Arts & Sciences Goes International

Italy

The faculty and students in the College of Arts & Sciences have traveled the globe this academic year!

The Ashland University Choir, directed by Dr. Rowland Blackley, represented AU in Italy during spring break in March.  The group divided their time between choral performances and sightseeing in Rome, Siena, Montecatini, Florence, Lucca, Parma and Milan.  The first choral presentation was singing at a mass in St. Peter’s Basilica.  Since it was the day before the papal conclave began, St. Peter’s Square was filled with visitors.  Our students received much spontaneous attention from CBS News, CBC radio and the BBC among other media outlets.  The choir sang for masses and concerts as well as doing impromptu performances at just about every stop.

Dr. Deborah Sullivan, (Family and Consumer Sciences) led a group of AU students and community members to Ireland.  This trip provided students the opportunity to experience one culture in depth with a focus on cuisine of the area while fulfilling course requirements of FCS 221 Food and Culture and International Perspectives Core or Border Crossing requirement.

Dr. Peter Slade (Religion) led a group of students to Mississippi as part of his REL340 Religion and Civil Rights class.  Students had the opportunity to meet veterans of the civil rights movement, visit significant historical sites and interact with organizations/churches that continue to work for justice and reconciliation today.  Students conducted historical research in the civil rights archive at the University of Mississippi and resided at the volunteer house of Voice of Calvary Ministries—one of the leading experiments in Christian community development and racial reconciliation.
