Heidi Jones is the director of academic advising for the College of Arts and Sciences at Ashland University. She has been in this position since June 2008. Given Ashland's faculty advising model, much of her work is helping faculty to understand and navigate various academic policies, procedures and deadlines. Additionally, she works with closely with incoming first year and transfer students, Exploring students and students experiencing academic difficulty. Heidi's research interests include the use of social media in academic advising, support and retention of veteran and other non-traditional populations and the role of advising in persistence and retention.
Heidi serves on a number of university wide committees committed to student success, retention and the promotion of effective academic advising practices. During the 2011-12 academic year, Heidi won the Staff Member of the Year award. She is particularly grateful for the award as it is a student driven nomination and selection process. Heidi also serves as the advisor for the Anime Club, a group of creative and engaging students primarily from the College of Arts and Sciences.
Heidi is active at the state and regional level in the field, currently serving as the Private School representative for the Ohio Academic Association. Heidi has held positions and presented at state and regional academic advising conferences.
Prior to this position she held a variety of positions at the University of California at Los Angeles which is also where she earned her undergraduate and graduate degrees. Her undergraduate degree is in American literature and her graduate degree is in higher education/student affairs. Heidi's previous positions include not only those in academic advising units, but in residence life, judicial affairs and international education.
When not on campus, Heidi cherishes spending time with her partner and son. Additionally, she enjoy cooking, travel and keeping in touch with friends and family all around the globe!
