Writing Consultants

The Writing Center provides assistance for all kinds of writing assignments and for all levels of writing skills. Working with Writing Consultants in our Writing Center should never be perceived as remedial. Conversely, Writing Consultants should be thought of as mentors-voices of experience for undergraduate students. Writing Consultants represent all disciplines, by majors and minors, and are selected to work in the Writing Center based on faculty referral. They do not proofread papers; they help students understand assignments and develop writing skills appropriately. (Please refer to Student Info.) Writing Consultants post biographies with appointment hours so students can work with consultants who have had courses students are currently taking.

A Writing Consultant can work directly with a course

Faculty are encouraged to select an exemplary student who has taken, or is currently taking, a course to advise students who are presently in that course. The benefit of this service is that the Writing Consultant knows the material and assignments of the course. If you would like to have a peer writing consultant for a course, please furnish name and recommendation to me. The Consultant will work directly with you regarding assignment expectations and the kind of advising you want. This could include reviewing rough drafts, discussing course material, helping with grammar, mechanics and structure, and documenting. The Consultant meets students in the Writing Center.

English 110

Writing Lab, English 110, is designed to work with writing assignments for courses across the curriculum. Writing Lab goes beyond the basics; it is a hands-on course taught through the English department to give students the opportunity of working with writing assignments individually or in small groups. The lab is worth one credit hour and is supervised by the Writing Center Director. For freshmen, 110 is taken concurrently with English 101 and 102. Outside of composition courses, the lab is flexible enough to assist writing for honors theses, graduate papers, capstone and upper-level courses. For these needs, students are teamed with writing specialists, students or faculty. (English 110 can be taken twice.)
