Information for Students
About the Writing Center . . .
- The Writing Center is located in 104 Bixler.
- The Writing Center is open approximately 10 hours each weekday; not all of these hours are staffed.
- Writing Consultants are available approximately eight hours each day, between 11 and 9.
- WA appointments schedules are posted inside the Writing Center.
- Students should come to the Writing Center to sign up for appointments.
- Appointments cannot be made by telephone.
- Ten undergraduate Writing Consultants are employed by the Writing Center.
- Graduate students should make appointments with Ms. Janet Aguiar, Gill Center.
What students should bring to the Writing Center . . .
- When a writing assignment is first given, start working on it and plan to visit the Writing Center several times. NOTE: We may refuse a first time review of a paper that is due the next day.
- Bring all handouts, instructions, class notes, etc. so you can discuss the assignments with us.
- Bring disks to save your work on. Fourteen computers, arranged on spacious tables, are available for paper writers. We encourage writing papers in the Writing Center, even if you do not have an appointment, as Writing Consultants can answer questions as you create.
- If you want help with documenting, bring sources or accurate accounts of reference material, including page numbers.
What we do not do . . .
- Please note that the Writing Center is not a tutoring service. We can help you develop and explore your own ideas and understanding of course material, but we cannot tutor the material itself.
- Do not ask a Writing Consultant to proofread your paper. Ask specific questions.
- A revision guide is available on the handout table; this will help you ask the right questions.
Writing Consultants . . .
- Think of Writing Consultants as mentors: they have written papers for the same courses you are now taking, so they may know the expectations of your assignments. When you are looking for an appointment, read the biographies of the Writing Consultants. Each bio lists the major/minor and past and present English courses. Try to match your course with the experience of the Writing Consultant.
