Community Care is our student organization that plans and participates in community service activities both on campus and throughout the Ashland community. Community Care consists of 5 teams: Environment Team, Health, Hunger and Homelessness, Youth and Literacy, Adopt-a-Grandparent and Habitat for Humanity. All students are welcome to participate in Community Care and their events. Executive positions are available for those interested in running current programs and creating new ones.
PROUD is an acronym that stands for "Partners Reaching Out for Ultimate Development." It is a tutoring and mentoring program that pairs Ashland University students with at-risk youth from the Ashland City schools. PROUD is a program that requires a year-long commitment. Applications are available in the spring and students are chosen based on their application and an interview.
Servant Leadership is a way of life that invites individuals to become leaders through serving others. On the Ashland University campus, the Servant Leadership House is located in Fraternity Circle, and currently 27 students reside there. The program encourages inward knowledge through leadership, outward giving through service and upward growth through spirituality. Students interested in living in the house will go through an application and interview process.
The Center for Community Service is located on the 2nd floor of the Hawkins Conard Student Center in the Student Activities Office. Our staff consists of a Director, AmeriCorps *VISTA, Intern and PROUD Student Coordinator. Please feel free to contact us with any questions you may have or to stop by and visit us to learn more about service at AU!
We partner with the Ashland County Food Bank, Associated Charities, Pump House Ministries, Project Linus and the Salvation Army just to name a few. Please check out our complete list of community partners including contact information in our Directory.
ABCC (Activities Budget Chartering Committee) funding requires that all funded organizations complete 2 service events per year in order to continue receiving funding. Your organization should fill out a community service form 2 weeks prior to your event for tracking purposes. Also, if you are raising money, books, toys, etc. you will also need to submit a solicitation request and be approved before beginning the drive. In order for us to track your organization's progress and include your efforts in our annual reports, we would appreciate it if you tracked your participants with our tracking form.
Judicial hours can be completed through several offices on campus. If you wish to complete these hours through the Center for Community Service, please stop by our office and talk with the Direcor of Community Service. Together we will find service opportunities and events that will fulfill your requirements.
Please register your event with us online, and we will put it on our calendar. Also, consider joining Community Care to help plan larger-scale service events for the entire campus!
Service Learning is the application of classroom knowledge to needs in the surrounding community. Currently, Ashland University uses the "plus-one" credit option in our service learning efforts. Marie Jolliff, our AmeriCorps VISTA currently coordinates this effort on our campus and would love to talk with you more about this option. Marie can be reached by email at: mjolliff@ashland.edu.
The Center for Community Service has 3 working positions available on a yearly basis. All positions require an application and interview process based on the position requirements. For more information on any of these positions, please email rschaaf@ashland.edu.
