Service Learning

"The most important thing an institution does is not to prepare a student for a career but for a life as a citizen."

- Frank Newman

Service learning is a form of experiential education that engages the student in a meaningful application of academic knowledge in significant service to the community.

It must include:

1.) Orientation or training specific to the service site

2.) Meaningful and engaging service

3.) Structured reflection.

Service learning is a course-based, credit bearing educational experience and is designed to promote civic responsibility, diversify and expand the student environment, and work to create citizens aware of their global responsibilities. All service learning activities will be noted on the student's transcripts.

Plus One Credit Option

The Plus-One Credit Option allows students to earn an extra institutional credit by doing 30 hours of service that is directly related to the course objectives of an already existing class.

  • The Plus One Credit option is not a course in itself- one hour must be attached to an already existing course.
  • The service experience must be tied to the academic content of a course with which it is taken.
  • The Plus One Service Option does not include any extra cost (as long as the student is concurrently taking no more than 18 credit hours).
  • The credit hour is evaluated as satisfactory/unsatisfactory (S/U).
  • Under the Plus-One  Credit option a student may receive no more than 3 service learning credit hours and one per course. A minimum of 30 hours of service is required for one credit hour.
  • The student must submit a Service Learning Contract to the Center for Community Service before beginning service.
  • The Plus One Credit may not apply to any major without the permission of the Department Chair and Dean of the College.

The Plus One Service Learning Contract must be approved by the last day to add/drop classes in a given semester for credit to be given.

  • The service requirement will be no less than 10 hours and no more than 29.
  • When students sign up for their academic service learning course, they will automatically be registered for the integrated service learning portion.
  • No additional credit hours will be awarded for the service.
