Europe in the Balance: Winston Churchill & WWII

May 13- 28, 2008

This study abroad trip will highlight the most important sites related to World War II in Western Europe, with a particular emphasis on the wartime leadership of Winston Churchill.

This tour is open to community members. If more people apply than seats available, students will be given priority.

Tentative Itinerary

Day Date Program
1 Tuesday, May 13 CLEVELAND Departure. Meet (12.30 p.m.) at Cleveland Hopkins International Airport for (2.35 p.m.) departure on Delta Air Lines flight DL #4621 (operated by Atlantic Southeast) for Atlanta; non-stop regional jet service (check luggage through to London). Arrive (4.28 p.m.) at Atlanta Hartsfield International Airport, South Terminal, and proceed to connecting departure (6.45 p.m.) on Delta Air Lines flight DL #58 for London; non-stop Boeing 767 service with dinner served en route.
2 Wednesday, May 14 LONDON Arrival. Upon arrival (8.15) at London Gatwick Airport, meet your airport assistant who will guide you to your private motorcoach for transfer to IBIS EARLS COURT for check-in, with stop at Chartwell House, the home of Winston Churchill, entrance included.
3 Thursday, May 15 LONDON. Morning (10.00) visit the Imperial War Museum, including audioguides. Afternoon visit to St. Paul's Cathedral.
4 Friday, May 16 LONDON. Morning (8.45) departure by private motorcoach for guided excursion to the Royal Air Force station in Uxbridge, including the Battle of Britain underground Operations Room. In the afternoon, continue to Hendon to visit the Royal Air Force Museum.
5 Saturday, May 17 LONDON. Morning (8.45) visit the Churchill Museum and the Cabinet War Rooms, including audioguides.
6 Sunday, May 18 LONDON. Day free for independent exploration.
7 Monday, May 19 LONDON/BAYEUX. Morning (07.15) departure by private motorcoach for Portsmouth, including visits to Southwick House, Eisenhower's D-Day headquarters, and the D-Day Museum. Continue to the pier for check-in (14.30) with Brittany Ferries for ferry departing (15.30) for Caen. Arrive (22.30) in Caen and transfer by private motorcoach, with assistance to NOVOTEL BAYEUX for check-in.
8 Tuesday, May 20 BAYEUX. Morning (09.00) departure by private motorcoach for full-day guided tour including Sainte-Mere-Eglise Church, Pointe du Hoc, American Cemetery in Colleville-sur-Mer, U.S. 1st Division Monument, Omaha and Utah Beaches.
9 Wednesday, May 21 BAYEUX/CAEN. Morning (9.00) departure by private motorcoach for full-day guided tour along Normandy Coast from Bayeux to Caen, including visits to Longues Battery, Mulberry Harbor at Arromanches, Juno Beach Memorial, and Atlantic Wall Museum, Pegasus Bridge and the British Cemetery in Ranville. Continue on to IBIS CAEN CENTRE for check-in.
10 Thursday, May 22 CAEN/PARIS. Morning (09.00) departure by private motorcoach for Paris with panoramic tour of the city. Check-in at IBIS GARE DU NORD CHATEAU LANDON.
11 Friday, May 23 PARIS. Morning (09.00) departure by private motorcoach for full-day city tour including visits to the Arc de Triomphe, the catacombs (12.00 pending reconfirmation and (14.30) the Hotel National des Invalides.
12 Saturday, May 24 PARIS. Day free for independent exploration.
13 Sunday, May 25 PARIS/MUNICH. Morning free for independent exploration. Walk to Paris Gare De 1'Est train station for departure (15.24) on TGV #9575 for Munich. Upon arrival (21.04) at Munich Central rail station, meet your guide who will walk you to HOTEL STACHUS for check-in.
14 Monday, May 26 MUNICH. Morning (09.00) departure by private motorcoach for guided visit to Berchtesgaden, including (11.00) Obersalzberg Documentation Center Berghof and Eagle’s Nest (subject to confirmation).
15 Tuesday, May 27 MUNICH. Depart by public transportation, as arranged by course instructor, for Dachau for (10.00) guided tour of the site, entrance included.
16 Wednesday, May 28 MUNICH/CLEVELAND. Morning departure (7.00) by private motorcoach to Munich Airport for departure (10.05) on Delta Air Lines flight DL #131 for Atlanta; non-stop Boeing 767 service with lunch served en route. Upon arrival (2:30 p.m.) at Atlanta Hartsfield International Airport, South Terminal, claim luggage and clear customs, then re-check luggage and proceed to connecting departure (4:21 p.m.) on Delta Air Lines flight DL #4250 (operated by Atlantic Southeast) for Cleveland; non-stop regional jet service. Arrive (6:09 p.m.) at Cleveland Hopkins International Airport.

Program Cost
$4,425.00
INCLUDED: airfare, hotel, daily buffet breakfast, private motor coach, ferry travel Portsmouth/Cherbourg, tour directors, drivers, and step on guides. Three credit hour course is offered during the spring semester.
NOT INCLUDED: Expenses for passport, beverages, telephone calls, laundry of personal items, trip cancellation/interruption insurance, lunches and dinners.

$500 non-refundable deposit due November 1
Remaining balance due February 1

Cancellation and Refund policy
Should cancellation occur prior to 90 days before departure, full refund will be granted less a $500 deposit. In addition to any airline penalties, the following specified costs are non-refundable: 60-89 days — $250; 46-59 days — 50% of tour price; 15 - 45 days — recoverable costs only (possible forfeiture of entire tour cost); cancellations received less than 15 days from departure will receive no refund. Cancellations must be submitted in writing; the date such notification is received by Seminars International, Inc. is the cancellation date. Trip cancellation insurance is strongly recommended.
