Information Technology has been making improvements to the student residential network (ResNet) over the past few months. These changes have caused some confusion with students on the registration for their computers, game consoles and other mobile devices. For clarification, we offer the following solutions for device registration.
The residence hall wired network is currently direct-connect. Simply connect your device to the in room wall jack using a network cable. A switch can be used to connect multiple devices to a single wall jack. DO NOT USE A ROUTER. Workstation switches usually come with 4 or 8 ports, meaning one port for the wall cable, the rest for devices. Students are responsible for supplying switches.
There are two wireless networks available throughout the main campus: “AshlandUniversity” and “AUSecure”. Note that only residence halls have full wireless coverage. Public and academic buildings have wireless hotspots, but are not fully wireless.
The “AshlandUniversity” wireless network
This wireless network uses a web portal for authentication. Computers will need to re-register each time they connect to this network (including after an accidental disconnect), or after 4 hrs idle, whichever comes first.
To connect to “AshlandUniversity” wireless network:
The “AUSecure” wireless network
This wireless network provides a more secure connection and usually only requires login credentials once. If you change your network password, you will be prompted to enter the new password. Also, Windows updates can change the settings below. If this occurs, AUSecure will need to be removed from the wireless network list and re-added.

Students do NOT need to use a wired connection to register game consoles. As long as the console has a web browser, students can register using the AshlandUniversity wireless network, however they will need to do this every time they want to connect. Consoles without a browser such as portable gaming devices e.g. PSP, Nintendo DS, etc., or to bypass the need to constantly register, the student needs to connect by a network cable or contact the Tech Support Center with the following information:

Our new wireless network uses the most advanced wireless security protocol available, WPA2 Enterprise. Few portable devices support this, but for those that do, this is the preferred method of connectivity.
Your device should allow you to specify a network (or SSID) to connect to. You will want to supply it (without quotes) with “AUSecure” as the SSID. You cannot search for this network, as it is hidden. You must manually specify it. It should then ask you for an encryption type. You’ll want to select WPA2 Enterprise, and if it asks for an algorithm, you’ll want to select AES. (Most devices will not ask for this and determine it automatically.) Lastly, the device should ask you for a user name and password. These are your AD credentials you use to sign on to University equipment. Note, if you’re only seeing a prompt for a password, you’ve not selected the “Enterprise” version of the protocol.
If your device is equipped with a web browser, but does not support WPA Enterprise wireless security it can still be used on the network. Your device will need to connect to the publicly accessible AshlandUniversity SSID. Your device should be able to search for and find this SSID. Once connected, start your web browser, and when you try accessing a page, you should be presented with a login screen for the wireless network. Simply enter your AD credentials, and you will be able to access the network.
