Technical Information for Collaborative Partners of Synchronous Video Conference Distance Learning.

The information below is intended for Ashland Universities Technology Partners at other academic institutions that use synchronous distance learning technologies.  Below is a listing of our current capabilities, connectivity and requirements.  If you are a distance learning student taking on-line courses, this technology section does not pertain to you.

Please test with the Ashland University IP Test Camera anytime you like.

The address is: 206.21.109.35

As of January 1, 2006 we will no longer support any ATM connectivity or classes of any kind.

We have started upgrading our technology to support multiple connections to anywhere in the world over H.323. We realize that video over IP (H.323) and SIP (Session Initiated Protocol) is the future of synchronous distance education and are taking necessary steps to advance this technology.

This fall semester we will start to support H.239 Data Sharing using a Bridgit conferencing system.  Please contact us to learn more about this new Ashland University technology and to schedule a test.

Our preferred method of connecting video conference classes is through IP.  The main campus is serviced by 40 megs of bandwidth with an additional 5 megs dedicated to inner Ohio connections and collaboration.  The 5 satellite centers each have 384 kbs set aside for video conferencing.  Bridging is done on a codec by codec basis.

We will continue to support ISDN calls up to 384 kps and requires a 48 hour notification.  There is a charge for ISDN connections and bridging services.  (See video conferencing pricing) We realize not all institutions have been able to make the change to H.323; therefore, we are keeping a limited ISDN connection up to service these educational institutions.

Some institutions utilize the bridging services of the Department of Administrative Services (DAS). We currently have one line to DAS able to go up to full T-1 speed (approx. 1.5Mps). We prefer not to use this service unless there are no other alternatives.

We are in the final stages of implementing technology to stream any class content to our LMS and Web through Mediasite. We also utilize Real Networks, Quick Time and Windows Media Player. Additionally we are starting to look at archiving Video Conference classes for our ANGEL and Web CT LMS and future media possibilities.
