The H1N1 virus (sometimes called swine flu) continues to be of worldwide concern. Hundreds of cases
involving college students throughout Ohio have been reported. Typically, symptoms have been mild to
moderate. However, similar to the seasonal flu, the virus can be lethal.
The Ashland University Health Center staff continues to work closely with the Ashland County Health
Department and the Ohio Department of Health in our efforts to limit transmission of the virus. To
date, we have had one report of positive influenza A on campus. This is not a confirmed case of H1N1
but does fall into the Type A category. The H1N1 virus is impacting younger people at a higher rate than
older adults. Therefore, it is reasonable to expect a number of cases on our campus and at the
university centers.
