The Christmas Truce
Video and discussion of one of the most amazing moments in World War I, Christmas 1914. An informal truce developed along many miles of the Western Front as German and English soldiers left their trenches and sang carols, exchanged food and gifts, and played soccer. In some places the truce lasted a few hours, in others several days. What actually happened and why? Was this an unpatriotic treasonous act or an act of hope and courage or something in between? Why did soldiers who had been shooting at each other the day before put down their guns? Why did they take them up again?
