Dr. Jeff Weidenhamer
Trustees’ Distinguished Professor and Professor of Chemistry
Jeff Weidenhamer has been a member of the Chemistry faculty at since 1989, and currently chairs the Department of Chemistry, Geology & Physics. He teaches General Chemistry, courses in analytical chemistry, and Core science courses including Science as a Cultural Force and Lead & Civilization. He previously served as Core Curriculum Director.
Weidenhamer’s research interests include the development of methods for analysis of plant root exudates in soil, and the contamination of consumer products with heavy metals such as lead and cadmium. His research in chemical ecology has been funded by the National Science Foundation. His research with students and colleagues on lead contamination of consumer products has resulted in at least 14 recalls by the Consumer Product Safety Commission involving more than 1.5 million children’s items, and has been cited in a congressional resolution seeking a ban on US export of electronic waste.
