Dr. Theodore A. Avtgis has joined the Ashland University community as Professor and Chair of the Department of Communication Studies. Dr. Avtgis received his Ph.D. from Kent State University in 1999 in Communication Studies with an emphasis on Organizational and Interpersonal Communication. He has served on the faculty of the University of Akron, St. John’s University, and West Virginia University. He has authored over 50 peer reviewed articles and book chapters on organizational communication, communication personality, and medical communication. His work has appeared in journals such the Journal of Trauma, Journal of Surgical Education, Management Communication Quarterly, Communication Education, among others.
He is co-author of six books and currently serves as Editor-in-Chief of Communication Research Reports, as an Adjunct Associate Professor in the Department of Surgery, West Virginia University School of Medicine, and is co-founder of Medical Communication Specialists. Among several awards, he was recognized as one of the top twelve most productive scholars in the field of Communication Studies (1996-2001), recognized as a member of the World Council on Hellenes Abroad (USA Region of American Academics), and in 2009 named as Centennial Scholar of Communication by the Eastern Communication Association as well as the 2011 recipient of the ECA Past Presidents’ Award for significant research contribution to the field of Communication Studies.
