Alex Sanchez-Behar

Alexander Sanchez-Behar received his B.A. in music from the University of California, Berkeley, a M.M. in music theory from Northwestern University, and a Ph.D. in music theory from Florida State University. He teaches the music theory & aural skills sequence and music composition. Prior to his arrival at Ashland University, Dr. Sanchez-Behar taught courses on musicianship, harmony, and form at Phoenix College, Florida State University, and Northwestern University. His current research focuses on counterpoint and polyphony in the recent instrumental works of John Adams. He has published his work on minimalism in American Music Teacher and American Music, and has presented music-theory papers on several twentieth- and twenty-first-century composers at annual conferences of the Society for Music Theory, Music Theory Southeast, and the Music Theory Society of the Mid-Atlantic. He has served on the Society for Music Theory Committee on Diversity from 2008–2011, and on the program committee for the 2006 Music Theory Southeast Annual Meeting.
