Dr. Mitchell Metzger is a Full Professor, where he has served as the Psychology Department chair since 2007. He earned a B.S. (1992) in Psychology from Bowling Green State University, and an M.A. (1994) and Ph.D. (1997) in Experimental Psychology from Kent State University. Prior to coming to Ashland University, Dr. Metzger worked for six years as an Assistant Professor at Penn State, Shenango. He has earned Ashland University’s Mentor Award twice (2006 & 2010), the Outstanding Male Faculty Award (2010), the National Society of Leadership and Success' Excellence in Teaching Award (2010), the Ohio Magazine Excellence in Education Award (2011), and has twice been nominated for the Taylor Teaching Award.
Dr. Metzger’s graduate training was in biopsychology, where he researched animal models of memory function, specifically investigating processes involved in retrograde amnesia. His current research is in the area of memory modulation, and factors involved in forgetting. To date, he has published more than 20 journal articles in such journals as Psychobiology, Physiology & Behavior, Neurobiology of Learning & Memory, and Perceptual & Motor Skills. As professional service, he serves as a manuscript reviewer for a number of journals and publishers. Dr. Metzger teaches General Psychology I and II, Introduction to Research Methods, Advanced Research in Psychology, Cognitive Psychology, Theories and Principles of Learning, Physiological Psychology, and Neuropsychology. From 2009-2012, Dr. Metzger served as the Director of the Ashland University in Germany Program.
