Advisory Council Charter

I. Name: The council will be called the Ashland University Field Experience Advisory Council and authorized by Ashland University College of Education.
II. Purpose: The council is created for the purpose of working with the Office of Field Experience and shall limit its activities to advising the Director on policies and procedures related to undergraduate and graduate field experiences and student teaching. Authority and responsibility for the program ultimately rests with Ashland University .
III. Objectives:
To support the mission of the Office of Field and Clinical Experience.
To reinforce the global nature of field experience, in that individuals are
encouraged to have a vested interest in simultaneously improving the education
of university students and students within the K-12 schools.
To identify and address issues and concerns between the public schools and the
Dwight Schar College of Education that may arise in the field sites.
To develop support and commitment to the clinical aspects of teacher
preparation.
To make sure the curriculum is preparing graduates whom will be ready for the
real world of teaching.
Review and recommend policies and procedures concerning placement and
evaluation of students in field experiences and student teaching.
IV. Relationship of the council to the Office of Field Experience:
It is the role and sole prerogative of the Office of Field Experience and Department of Teacher Education to enact policy. The advisory council is expected to offer recommendations for the program and to provide information relevant to improving the quality of field experience for teacher education students so students are well prepared to enter the career of teaching. The council members serve as a liaison between the public schools and the university and promote constructive and necessary change.
V. Membership Composition:
Members OF THE Advisory Council will be appointed by the Chair of Teacher Education based upon the recommendation of the Director of Field Experience. The 25 member Advisory consist of a cross-section of teachers (Preschool, Pre-K-3, Middle Grades, High School, and Pk-12 Specialist), administrators (preschool, elementary, middle and high schools) from Ashland City , Mansfield City and area schools as well as teacher education students, alumni, and faculty. The Chair of the Department of Teacher Education and the Director of Field Experiences will serve as members also. Members are volunteers who share expertise and/or interest in working with field experience program.
VI. Term:
A term of membership shall last for three years, with one-third of the membership appointed each year. Terms begin July 1.
VII. Moderator and Recorder:
The Director of Field Experience council will serve as the moderator and Administrative Assistant to the Director will serve as the recording secretary for each meeting.
VIII. Meetings:
Meetings shall be conducted by parliamentary procedure as outlined in Robert's Rule of Order. The council will meet at least two (2) times per year. Written notice of the meetings will be mailed to members at least three weeks before the meetings. All A.U. College of Education members are also invited to participate in all meetings.
A focused agenda will be used with time allotted for communication of concerns in the field. Minutes of each meeting will be kept. Copies will be available at each meeting. Recommendations passed by a majority vote and reports from the council will be submitted in writing to the director who will in turn discuss with the chair. Documents will include both suggested action and justification for such action. Members who are absent from meetings without reasonable cause from two successive meetings will be considered to have resigned their seats. The Director will appoint a person to complete the term of the vacancy. While members are expected and encouraged to discuss the field experience activities within the school community, members shall not report council member's opinions expressed in the meetings nor shall they report independently on council recommendations.
