Enterprise speaker will offer an all-campus lecture at 9:00 a.m.
Friday, March 28 in the Trustees Room of the Myers Convocation Center.
Dr. Locke is Dean's Professor Emeritus of Leadership and Motivation
from the University of Maryland. His Cockroft Forum topic will be AThe
Prime Movers: Traits of the Great Wealth Creators. A brief biographical
statement is included below for your information.
Dr. Edwin Locke received his Ph.D. in Industrial Organizational Psychology from Cornell University in 1964.
He has published more than 230 articles, chapters, and books on leadership, goal setting, incentives, job satisfaction, and the philosophy of science. He is internationally known for his work on human motivation. He is the author of such books as "The Prime Movers: Traits of the Great Wealth Creator" and "Goal Setting: A Motivational Technique That Works" (with G. Latham).
His commentaries on animal "rights" environmentalism, American values, and education have appeared in the Los Angeles Times, the Chicago Tribune, the Houston Chronicle and elsewhere.
"The Prime Movers" asks what enables businessmen like Andrew Carnegie, James Hill and Bill Gates to create wealth on such a vast scale. Dr. Locke identifies the essential psychological traits of these great businessmen, by focusing thematically on characteristics such as independent vision; an active mind; confidence; drive to action; passion; love of ability in others. We learn about innovators like Michael Dell, who envisioned the idea of computers marketed directly to consumers. Walt Disney's passion for animation drove him to work 20-hour days. Pierre DuPont prized human ability so highly that he bought up other companies to acquire their talented employees.
