The Curriculum & Instruction concentration in literacy education helps K-12 classroom teachers to deepen their understanding of literacy development and the processes of reading and writing. It also broadens the range of teachers’ instructional and assessment approaches, helping them to have greatest possible impact on their students’ learning. Candidates in the program will develop the confidence to make evidence-based instructional decisions in their own classrooms and to advocate appropriate practice with parents, colleagues, administrators, and policy-makers.

What Courses are Required in this Program?
This program provides two courses that provide a solid base of theory about language and literacy from a pre-K- 12 perspective. Students in this concentration may then focus on one of three areas when selecting literacy courses: early childhood/elementary grades, middle/secondary grades, or assessment and intervention in literacy.
Is this program for me?
- I want to significantly increase my knowledge about all aspects of language, and the processes of reading and writing.
- I want to learn more about selecting and using age-appropriate literature to teach reading and writing and to help students use literature to make connections to content areas by taking a literature course tailored the age level I teach.
- I want to expand my awareness of as well as be able to purposefully use a variety of instructional strategies and assessment tools by taking both age-specific methods courses and K-12 courses that connect theory and practice.
- I want to engage in a self-selected capstone experience that guides in-depth, independent inquiry into a current issue in literacy education and encourages me to apply new ideas to improve my my students’ learning.
Note: Online courses do not require students to attend classes at a graduate center. Hybrid courses are a combination of online and face-to-face classes. Hybrid and online sections of classes are not available for every course during every term. See the Graduate Course Rotations and the current Schedule of Graduate Course Offerings for additional information.
