Philanthropy & Community Service
Service to others is central to the mission of every fraternity and sorority. In 2006, AU’s Greek organizations continued to demonstrate their commitment to supporting their national philanthropic beneficiaries, individuals and organizations in need in Ashland County, and our campus community. In total, the AU Greek community
donated over 2,000 hours of service and raised nearly $16,000 for charity in 2006.
The following is a brief look at how each chapter contributed.
Alpha Delta Pi
• Silent Auction- In March, thanks to the generosity of local businesses, the chapter raised over $3,000 for the Ronald McDonald House through its annual silent auction.
• Pull for Ronald McDonald House- In September, the chapter collected pull tabs from aluminum cans in every AU residence hall. Two garbage bags full of tabs, valued at $4,200, were donated to the Ronald McDonald House.
• Cornhole Tournament- In October, 56 competitors joined the chapter in raising
$300 for the Ronald McDonald House through its annual Cornhole Tournament.
• Pump House Halloween Party- The Chapter aided Pump House Ministry in putting on its annual Halloween Party.
• Christmas Gifts- During formal recruitment, ADPi collected and wrapped Christmas gifts for families in Ashland’s Pump House Ministry. In December, the chapter also raised $800 for the Ronald McDonald House by serving food at various AU holiday dinners.
• Volunteering in the Community- Over the course of the year, sisters served the community in
numerous ways ranging from volunteering in Africa to raking leaves for the elderly. The
chapter made fourteen visits to Ronald McDonald House in Cleveland.

Alpha Phi
• Cardiac Arrest
• Mr. University
• Teeter Totter-A-Thon- In this first event of the fall semester, the chapter raised over $1,000 for the Alpha Phi Foundation.
• Juvenile Diabetes Walk for the Cure- The chapter participated in this event for the first time this year, walking in support of one of its own sisters donating $730 in her name to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.

Delta Zeta
• Dale Roy School- In the spring, Delta Zeta held a dance for students at Dale-Roy School in Ashland. Other efforts at Dale-Roy included making Valentines for
students last February and fun, personalized folders in the fall.
• “Trick or Treat, Help Someone Eat”- In October, sisters conducted a canned food drive and donated over 850 cans of food, toiletry items, and other non-perishable goods to the Salvation Army in Ashland.
• Tutoring at Mapleton Elementary- Several sisters volunteered each week to assist with classroom projects and activities.
• Good Shepherd Holiday Dinner- On November 19, about 30 Delta Zeta women
volunteered to serve meals and clean up following this annual event at Good
Shepherd nursing home.
• Salvation Army Bell Ringers- In December, Delta Zeta donated a day to “ring the bell” for the Salvation Army outside a local store.

Tau Kappa Epsilon
• Alzfest- In this annual TKE event, local bands performed to raise money for the Alzheimer’s Association.
• TKE, CAB, RHA Halloween Dance- This ghoulish good time included a dance and costume contest in Redwood Hall. Proceeds from the event were donated to the Alzheimer’s Association.
• Memory Walk- In this event, members of the AU community raised money for the Alzheimer’s Association and then spent a chilly Saturday morning walking around campus.

Phi Delta Theta
• Ohio Reads- Phi Delts pioneered this reading intervention program at Osborn Elementary School in Ashland. 18 Brothers combined for nearly forty hours of service each week through this
program.
• ALS Walk- The chapter participated in this event in Warren, Ohio to raise money for the ALS Foundation.
• Phi For a Day Auction- Brothers were auctioned for six hours of service to the highest bidder. This event raised over $2,100 for ALS.

Phi Kappa Psi
• “Get Well” Cards- In the spring, Phi Psi raised about $1,000 for an AU student who developed a rare form of cancer.
• Salvation Army Clothing Drive- In the spring, Phi Psi collected and donated about 15 bags of
clothing to Ashland’s Salvation Army.
• Disability Awareness Day- In March, the men of Phi Psi teamed up with Disability Services to
distribute information about disabilities and sensitivity.
• Feed the Children Campaign- In April, Phi Psi raised about $200 for Feed the Children.
• Heart Attack Ministry- In February and March, brothers placed large hearts in people’s yards to let them know they were being thought of and prayed for by the chapter.
• Acoustic Café- Phi Psi teamed up with CAB and Tech Crew in March to raise about $100 for the Barret Memorial Scholarship Fund.
• MADD Car Bash- During Homecoming week, Phi Psi raised $257 for Mothers Against Drunk Driving.
• Camp Nuhop Cleanup- In September, the AU chapter teamed with Phi Psi’s colony at Ohio University to mulch, weed, and pick up trash at the campgrounds.
• Ashland Rape Crisis Center- After painting, removing carpet, and moving furniture at its new
facility, the men of Phi Psi were named the center’s Volunteers of the Month for October.
• Pennies for Prevention- In November, the chapter raised over $300 in change to help put smoke detectors in homes across the country.
• Bracelets for Skyler- In November, the chapter began selling bracelets to benefit a local family who lost its home and son in a recent fire. A benefit concert was also held and raised $350 for the family.
• Rake-n-Run- Brothers gathered to anonymously rake local residents’ yards in November.
• Toys for Tots- At its annual Christmas party on December 3, the chapter collected $82 and 86 wrapped gifts to be donated to local children in need. Brothers and friends also combined to write 45 Christmas cards to senior citizens.
