Foreign Languages at Ashland University

The Department of Foreign prepares students for significant and productive careers in or involving foreign languages. Students may opt for the B.A. or B.S. Ed. degree in French and Spanish as well as minors in French, Spanish, and Foreign Studies . Foreign Language Majors benefit from a challenging, comprehensive, and balanced curriculum of language, civilization, and literature and have access to Study Abroad programs in Canada, France, Mexico , Costa Rica, Spain, and other countries. The Foreign Language curriculum at AU and in study abroad offers students the educational opportunities needed to promote student achievement of expected outcomes and to gain recognition for the department as a leader regionally. The faculty's unique "accent on the individual" through mentoring, advising and participation in co-curricular opportunities, the portfolio assessment process, and attention to individual student needs combines with the curriculum to create a challenging yet supportive atmosphere in which students can realize their potential.

For non-majors/minors, completion of the second-year courses in the basic language program in French, German, and Spanish provides a strong, multi-skill foundation in a language and fulfills the language requirement for the B.A. degree . Students may enter the foreign language course sequence any appropriate point, based on the Placement Tool established by the Department and the Registrar's Office.
