Research Databases and Remote Authentication for Off-campus Users
There
are three kinds of databases available from AU library detailed
in the database chart below and available on each Research
Database page. Also indicated is the availability of full-text within
each database. The three distinctions are:
- Databases accessible
from anywhere on or off campus.
- Databases accessible
from AU Network computers .
- Databases accesible
both on and off campus but require remote authentication for off-campus
use.

Remote authentication
Most
OhioLINK databases, the OhioLINK Electronic Journal center (EJC), and
EbscoHOST require remote authentication for off-campus use. Remote
authentication identifies the user, at a location which is not part
of the AU network, as an authorized user of a product or service (database).
A remote authentication screen will appear when this is required.
For more information, an
Instructional Resource Center Tutorial, Authenticating
Off-Campus, is available. Follow these steps to
authenticate:
- Be sure to have
installed an internet browser that is compatible with OhioLINK's
remote authentication service. OhioLINK staff are trying to determine
what older versions of browsers may have problems using this service.
They have confirmed older versions of Netscape Commuicator,
Internet Explorer, Opera, and LYNX do work with the remote authentication
service. AOL browsers will NOT work with OhioLINK's remote
service.
- On the Institution
Selection Form, select Ashland University click
the submit.
- On the next screen,
the OhioLINK Authentication Form, enter your name (last name first)
and your Univeristy ID number. Your University ID number
is the seven digit number on the face of your student ID below your
picture. This number also appears on your course schedule,
other registration documents, and on the wallet sized AU identification
card mailed to all off-campus students. After entering this
information, click on the submit button. Please note,
it may take a minute or so to complete the authentication process.
- After you have
been authenticated, you will see the Authentication Successful screen.
You now have access to all of the appropriately licensed OhioLINK
databases. Login lasts for a period of two hours, or until you log
off your computer. It is possible to login additional times. It
is not necessary to login again during your session, when you change
databases.
For
more information, see the Frequently
Asked Questions about remote authentication from OhioLINK. You may
authenticate
now, or return to Research Databases.
