Q: What are the advantages of placing items on E-Res?
A: Electronic Reserves (E-Res) allows
your students to access required and/or recommended readings from any networked
computer. Having an electronic copy means students can access the readings when
the library isn't open and they do not have to compete with fellow students for
the paper copies available for check out.
Q: What criteria
determine which materials are posted in the electronic reserves system? A: The electronic
reserve system will post materials which are considered “fair use” and which do
not require copyright holder permission to post electronically.
Q: What types of
material meet these “fair use” criteria? A: The following are
examples of items meeting fair use criteria:
- Faculty
generated documents (sample tests, outlines, syllabi, course instructions)
- Student
generated documents (with signed permission form)
- Works
published prior to 1923 or no longer under copyright jurisdiction
- Links
to e-journals subscribed to by the library
- Single
chapters of books (typically not to exceed 10 % of the entire work) that
will not be on electronic reserve in a subsequent semester.
- Single
articles from a paper journal that will not be on electronic reserve in a subsequent
semester.
Q: What about
requests to post materials that do not meet the “fair use” criteria? A: The library will
advise faculty members on how to request copyright permission if the library
considers the material beyond "fair use" guidelines.
Materials may be posted if documentation of permission requests
are on file.
Q: How long will my
materials remain on the electronic reserves system? A: Six weeks before
the end of a semester, the library will send a retain or release form
for all items that you have placed on electronic reserve. Items will be routinely removed from
electronic reserves at the end of the last day of the semester. Items wanted in subsequent semesters may require
copyright holder’s permission.
Q: How may course
readings not eligible for electronic reserves be made available to my students? A: Usually paper
copies of materials you supply can be placed in the paper reserves system at
the reserve desk in the library. Copyright permission should secured through the bookstore
for materials to be used in course packs.
A:
How do students find materials
that are on reserve?
Q:
We recommend that students
search paper and electronic reserve materials through the AU
library catalog. Here you will
find separate search boxes for paper reserves and electronic reserves.
