Chat Services, KnowItNow Academic | Candi Clevenger, OhioLINK
January 4, 2008 |  KnowItNow Academic uses the KnowItNow software and interface, but questions to this queue are answered by academic librarians, rather than the public librarians who staff the 24x7 KnowItNow service. KnowItNow Academic is staffed Mondays through Thursdays from 1-9 p.m., and Fridays, from 1-6 p.m. The pilot will run through January and February and then the service will be evaluated. Only one librarian will staff KnowItNow Academic at a time. Patrons will be directed to the regular KIN queues when the academic queue is not staffed.

KnowItNow Academic will be staffed by librarians from the libraries participating in the pilot: Cleveland Health Science Library, Lorain County Community College , Marietta College , Mt. Union College , Oberlin College , Ohio Wesleyan University, Wright State University and Youngstown State University.

About KnowItNow: KnowItNow is a service of the State Library of Ohio and local public libraries. KnowItNow is funded through a federal Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) grant awarded by the State Library of Ohio.

Chat with a Librarian Service Ends | From Candi Clevenger, OhioLINK
December 21, 2007

"OhioLINK's Chat with a Librarian service will cease operations after December 21, 2007. After December 21, OhioLINK students and faculty who desire online assistance should use their library's Instant Message service if one is available, contact their library, or try KnowItNow.org, a statewide live online reference service.

During five years of service, librarians from 40 libraries have taken turns providing online research assistance to students and faculty from OhioLINK member colleges and universities through Chat with a Librarian. More than 52,000 chat sessions were conducted since the service began in 2002.

Changes in libraries and information technology, and declining use of Chat with a Librarian, have lead us to re-examine this service. In the last several years, Instant Messaging has become a major communication tool on campuses. Many libraries have begun to use IM to answer questions for their own communities. This way, students and faculty are served by librarians from their own institutions.

In addition, Ohio supports a live online reference service called KnowItNow, which operates twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week. KnowItNow is a service of the State Library of Ohio and local public libraries. An academic service is being added to this program.

We sincerely thank the hundreds of librarians who have provided Chat with a Librarian service, and the thousands of library users who appreciated the anytime/anywhere help."

Database Changes and Updates
July 31, 2006 | Ashland University Library and OhioLINK are constantly striving to provide the strongest portfolio of research resources possible, within our budgetary limitations, to support our joint teaching, learning and research needs. In order to better achieve this goal, the OhioLINK community has agreed to cancel some database subscriptions and use those funds to upgrade current subscriptions and subscribe to new databases beginning July 1, 2006. As a result of these changes, OhioLINK and its member libraries will be able to cost-effectively provide the community with more full-text resources across a broader array of disciplines.

The following new databases are now available to all students, faculty and staff at OhioLINK member institutions: Agricola, Bibliography of Native North Americans, Computers & Applied Sciences Complete, Economia y Negocios, Education Research Complete, Environment Index Complete, Evidence-Based Complementary Medicine (coming soon), Film & Television FTLI (coming late 2006), Fuente Academica, Garden, Landscape & Horticulture Index, Gender Studies Database, GLBT Life, Gongwer News Service, Insurance Periodicals Index, International Political Science Abstracts, Legal Collection, Literary Reference Center, MedicLatina, SPORTDiscus, Vente et Gestion and Women's Studies International. For off-campus access to these databases visit the alphabetical list of databases.

OhioLINK offers additonal renewals
September 19, 2005
| Students, faculty and staff at Ashland University and across Ohio can now keep the books they borrow from other OhioLINK libraries for up to 15 weeks , as long as another user has not requested the materials.

"Users statewide have been asking to keep OhioLINK books longer than six weeks," Tony Maniaci, chair of OhioLINK's Inter-Campus Services Committee, which sets OhioLINK borrowing policies, said. "But OhioLINK has to carefully balance the needs of researchers who wish to keep an item for an extended period of time with those who have short timeframes to meet a deadline or complete a class assignment. Recent improvements to the software used for online borrowing checks for holds before allowing a renewal. This new functionality allows us to extend the maximum borrowing period for items and better meet the needs of all OhioLINK users."

OhioLINK books may be checked out for three weeks and renewed up to four times, as long as another user has not placed a hold on the item, for a total maximum borrowing period of 15 weeks. Users can request and renew OhioLINK books and local library materials online via the library's Web site at http://library.ashland.edu/  Users can request to pick up items at the AU Library, the Seminary Library, the Columbus and Stark campuses or any other participating OhioLINK library. Items are usually delivered in just two to three days. There is no charge for Ashland University students, faculty and staff to request OhioLINK items, but late fees are charged for items kept past the due date.

ISI citation databases added

Electronic Reference Book Collection | OhioLINK Database
January 30, 2003 |
This collection contains special-topic reference books encyclopedias, handbooks, biographical collections, guides from ABC-CLIO, an educational reference publisher. One hundred twenty-six electronic reference books are currently available. The initial OhioLINK Electronic Reference Books Collection will grow to a total of approximately 270 books. We would encourage you to browse the list of titles.   All are available in full text and are searchable by keyword.   This is a good example of a scholarly resource know to be on the "deep" or "hidden" web.   It is a resource available over the web, but not found or searchable through a web browser like google.   It is a distinction we believe our students should understand.
