Mock Caldecott Award Panels

Resources beyond the IRC include various activities and tours throughout the year with different education classes. At the beginning of each term, a Mock Caldecott Award panel session is held with the education students in Dr. Mary Rycik's children's literature course. This page details titles discussed and selected by the class, as well as general information regarding Caldecott Awards and a webliography of illustrators presented.

Caldecott Information & Resources

Criteria and terms from the American Library Association's (ALA) Caldecott medal committee are utilized. To expedite the activity, picture books are pre-selected with illustrator information and dates already verified. Terms for a book to be considered are as follows:

  • The Medal shall be awarded annually to the artist of the most distinguished American picture book for children published in English in the United States during the preceding year. There are no limitations as to the character of the picture book except that the illustrations be original work. Honor Books may be named. These shall be books that are also truly distinguished.
  • The Award is restricted to artists who are citizens or residents of the United States.
  • The committee in its deliberations is to consider only the books eligible for the award, as specified in the terms.

Mock Caldecott Panel: Spring 2008

Dr. Mary Rycik's children's literature class participated in a Mock Caldecott Award session Tuesday, February 5, 2008. Criteria and terms followed were those used by the Association for Library Services for Children, American Library Association Medal committee. This session was planned to review titles with eligibility for the recently announced (January 14, 2008) 2008 Caldecott award.

About the titles: The collection submitted for review is a mix of well known illustrators, including previous award winners such as Leo and Diane Dillon and David Small, artists known for work in different medias, and illustrators new to the field of children's picture books. Different art mediums are represented as well including collage, charcoal pencil, watercolors, ink, acrylics, markers, and various mixed media.

Eighteen books were considered as possible contenders for the award. The original field was narrowed to four; one book was selected the winner, and one awarded honor distinction. This is a short webliography of books considered, illustrator web sites, and related childrens literature links used by the panel.
