Understanding Call Numbers

Ashland University Library uses the Library of Congress classification system. Call numbers follow LC classification which consists of 21 main classes, organized alphabetically (A to Z without I,O,W,X and Y), by discipline. When viewing a call number, the first letter defines main class with a second letter further deliniating a specific sub-division. In many cases, cutter numbers detail and clarify subjects. Lastly, call numbers are completed with author name and publication year.

Sample Title:     No, David!     Author:  David Shannon     Call Number: PZ7.S52865 No 1998

Call number

View Catalog Record:

Library Catalog Tips

Here are a few "quick tips" to locate items in the library catalog. The first group illustrates results achieved when searching by word. The second group is a search via LC Subject Headings. Extended Display is shown with several links to includes call number and location. If you wish to view more items per page, select the Display Headings option to see 12 selections per page. If the search retrieves more than twelve titles, Next Page allows for navigation between pages. Click on one of the following links for a head start, or formulate your own search.

Search by "KEYWORD"

Searching by keyword utilizes record title, subject, and content notes. It is possible to limit word searches by material type (book, audiovisual), location (AU circulating), and date.

Example results: Caldecott Books |  Educational Technology |  Praxis | School Principal

Search by "LC SUBJECT"

Searching by LC Subject, or subject heading, indicates library of congress subject heading assigned. For broader topics, there may be several related subject headings listed as well.  When looking at a particular record, it is also possible to find like texts by "clicking" on subject links displayed in each record.

Example results: Children's Literature | Classroom Environment | Education Research

Finding your book

Finding your selection is a simple matter of knowing which floor of the library houses that particular LC classification. The library web site has a floor by floor directory to help with locating books. Additionally, directories are located outside the elevators on each floor and are posted within in both elevators. Need help? Additional help is available on the main floor at the reference desk, circulation desk, reserve desk or the IRC (2nd floor).
