Summer Residency News

Dates for 2008 Residency: July 13 through July 26

Room and Board, 2008: The University has promised the MFA Program on-campus housing for the 2008 Summer Residency.  We are in the process of working out the details and hope to have room and board information for you soon!  Additionally, dinner each evening of the residency will be catered in the Executive Suite, ninth floor of Amstutz Hall, where we dined the majority of the last week in 2007.

Visiting Writers: Steve and Joe have invited another six outstanding writers to present craft seminars and readings for the 2008 Summer Residency.  They are: Marilyn Chin, William Kittredge, Debra Marquart, Floyd Skloot, David Wojahn, and Kevin Young.  Visit the Ashland MFA website http://www.ashland.edu/mfa to read their bios.

Calls for Submissions

Ooligan Press is seeking new voices within the genres of fiction, nonfiction, young adult literature, and poetry.  We are a general trade press with a keen eye for publications with social, literary, or educational value.  Our main editorial interests include (but are not limited to) works that give voice to the underrepresented; works that honor cultural and natural diversity; works dedicated to the craft of publishing, editing, writing, and book arts; works with a new or rediscovered Pacific Northwest connection; and previously unpublished English translations of foreign titles.  Because of our innovative publishing process, we believe that Ooligan is a great match for up-and-coming authors looking for their first publisher. For detailed submission guidelines see http://www.ooligan.pdx.edu.

Ms. Stephanie Cox of Columbus, Ohio is launching two new magazines in 08.  The first is Sports Ohio, and will be geared toward college and pro team sports.   The second is Elite Life and targets women ages 25-50.  There will be some high end fashion, inspirational pieces, etc. with the career woman as the central theme.  For example, the prototype hitting the stands in Jan. 08 will feature Donna James, President of Strategic Investments at Nationwide and will address her accomplishments and struggle to attain her current success.   Stephanie is looking for anyone interested in writing for her publications freelance.  She will pay per word count and is expecting at least 500 word articles.  She would also like any contact information or ideas for people to cameo.   Contact Stephanie at 614-352-9094, or by email stepjc2003@yahoo.com

Directory of Ohio Creative Writers:

For you Ohio writers, the Ohio Arts Council's Directory of Ohio Creative Writers lists approximately 500 authors of fiction, poetry, creative nonfiction, drama and literary or art criticism who live or work in Ohio.  This nonjuried list of one-page resumes supplied by creative writers is updated each year.  The directory can be accessed through their website at http://www.oac.state.oh.us.  The directory serves:

  • writers who wish to network and learn more about literary activities in the state,
  • authors who wish to promote their books,
  • presenters looking for writers,
  • libraries - reference, community service, and acquisitions departments.

There are no eligibility requirements for inclusion in the directory.

Applications Available for Puffin Foundation Artist Grant
Awards

Deadline: December 30, 2007

The Puffin Foundation (http://www.puffinfoundation.org/) makes
grants to emerging artists in the fields of art, music, theater,
dance, photography, and literature whose works due to their genre
and/or social philosophy might have difficulty being aired.  Grants from the Puffin Foundation can only be awarded to perma-
nent residents and citizens of the United States. U.S. citizens
whose projects encompass work in other countries are still eli-
gible to apply. The foundation does not have the means to fund
large film/documentary proposals, grants for travel, continuing
education, or the writing or publishing of books.  Average grant awards are $1,000 to $2,500 each. Visit the foundation's Web site for information on requesting an application and for descriptions of funded projects.  RFP Link:

Stephen Haven has published a chapbook of collaborative poetry translations of four contemporary Chinese poets, Duo Duo, Gu Cheng, Mang Ke and Moi Fei.  "The Enemy in Defensive Positions: Poems from China" will be released this month from Poetry Miscellany Chapbooks (University of Tennessee, Chattanooga).  Haven's collaborative translators are Jin Zhong and Wang Shouyi (Fulbright Scholar in Residence at Ashland University, 1996-1997).  Haven has also signed a contract with Syracuse University Press for the spring 2008 publication of his memoir, "The River Lock: One Boy's Life Along the Mohawk."

Lydia Rose and Elvis Elijah DavisJoanna Robinson's essay, "Skin Deep" will be published in an upcoming issue of River Teeth: A Journal of Nonfiction Narrative.

Ruth Schwartz recently had a proposal accepted to teach a weeklong workshop called "Full Vision/Full Truth: Writing and Spiritual Practice" at the Split Rock Arts Program in Minneapolis this summer.

Sarah Wells has returned to Ashland from maternity leave after welcoming her son, Elvis Elijah Davis Wells, into the world.  She will be moving to Ashland by the end of the month (hopefully), with her husband Brandon, daughter Lydia, Elvis, and faithful redbone coonhound, Tex.

Kathryn Winograd has a poem, "Matrix," appearing in the upcoming Southern California Review as one of ten finalists for the Ann Stanford Poetry prize; two poems, "Memories of Horses" and "Menarche" will appear in either the winter or spring issue of Calyx, A Journal of Art and Literature by Women; Many Mountains Moving literary journal nominated “Van Gogh’s Saint-Remy” for a Pushcart Prize; two creative
nonfiction pieces, “Finding the Well,” and “Dark Skies” will appear in the upcoming online journal, Wazee; Colorado Council International Reading Association (CCIRA) has accepted her joint presentation on “Teaching the River of Words” for its February 2008 Conference on Literacy; she will be traveling to the Navajo Reservation in Arizona and New Mexico to work with tribal leaders on using poetry in the classroom as part of her continuing work with the Middle Ground Project, a University of Northern Colorado’s Presidential Academy grant in American History and Civics Education Grant; she was recently honored with the Distinguished Faculty Award from Arapahoe Community College.
