Fox 8 News Weekend Sports Anchor to Speak at Ashland University’s Winter Commencement

John Telich, WJW-TV Fox 8 News Weekend Sports Anchor and a Class of 1975 graduate of Ashland University, will present the address at Ashland University’s winter commencement ceremony. The event will be held Dec. 12 at 10 a.m. in Kates Gymnasium in the Physical Education Center.

John Telich anchors Fox 8 sports on weekends and produces a variety of features and serves as veteran correspondent on many key events, such as NBA Playoffs. He also tackles tough physical assignments, such as flying with the Navy’s Blue Angels. For seven seasons, Telich has hosted the Cleveland Cavaliers pre-game show on Fox Sports Net.

Prior to joining WJW in 1980, Telich was assistant sports director of WIVB TV in Buffalo, New York. He also covered sports on television in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and Rapid City, South Dakota. A graduate of Ashland College in 1975, Telich began his career at a local radio station in 1972 in Ashland, Ohio.

In October of 2009, Telich was given the Chuck Heaton Award by the Press Club Hall of Fame and two years prior, he was inducted into the Cleveland Association of Broadcasters Hall of Fame. The nine-time Emmy Award winner has won numerous awards for coverage of Cleveland sports. United Press International, Associated Press and other organizations have honored Telich.

In 2001, Telich was honored by the Ohio High School Athletic Association for his long time coverage of high school sports. In 2005, Telich won the Golden Deeds Award bestowed on him by the Greater Cleveland Football Coaches Association. In the late 1980s and early 1990s, he was a featured broadcaster for WVIZ’s High School Football Game of the Week.

A fitness buff, Telich has completed 90 triathlons over the past 24 years, including three Ironman Distance races. Ironman races entail a 2.4 mile swim, followed by a 112 mile bike ride and capped off with a 26.2 mile marathon run. Telich began tackling trail ultra marathons in 2009, completing a 50 kilometer race, and in June 2009, he completed a 50 mile ultra. His next goal is to compete in a 100 mile ultra marathon in 2010.

The Euclid High school graduate is a member of that school’s Athletic Hall of Fame, and has been married 33 years to the former Jane Quinton, his college sweetheart from what
was then Ashland College. They are the parents of three children, Courtney, 32; Patrick, 30; and Joseph, 27.
