Coburn Gallery at Ashland University Sets National Juried Exhibition

ASHLAND, Ohio – The Coburn Gallery at Ashland University will hold a national juried exhibition titled “Ode to Degas.” The exhibition opens with a reception on Friday, May 21, from 6 to 8 p.m. and will run through June 18. Admission to this family friendly exhibition is free and open to the public.

The opening reception coincides with the 28th Annual Spring Dance Concert presented by Opus II Dance Studio, which features the Ashland Regional Ballet in the Hugo Young Theatre.

This exhibition is a collection of works that embody the concepts of movement explored by Edgar Degas, most specifically in his dancers. The exhibition features 21 artworks from artists across the United States selected by juror Neil MacDonald, who lives and works in Stow, Ohio. MacDonald studied and received a MFA in painting from Kent State University and a BFA in painting from Cleveland Institute of Art.

“I am very excited about this exhibition not only because it showcases the talents of visual artists from across the country but because it also celebrates the fine arts, more specifically dance in the Ashland, said Cynthia Petry, director of the Coburn Gallery. “We are very lucky to have many different dance opportunities for children in our community. Ode to Degas should inspire young visual artists and dancers alike.”

Exhibiting artists include Sallie Poet, Utah; Pam Adams, Ohio; Phil Napala, Virginia; Gadi Zamir, Ohio; Nicole McCormick, Virginia; Michael Marling de Cuellar, Georgia; George Kocar, Ohio; Will Reed, New York; Kasumi, Ohio; Mikhail Gubin, New York; Leo Mazzeo, Massachusetts; Cheri Homaee, Ohio; and Eliana Call-Saari, Ohio.

Cash awards were given for Best in Show to Phil Napala for his photograph titled “Dance Before Dance” and Honorable Mentions went to Nichole McCormick Santiago for her drawing titled “Belly Dancer with Dog” and Pam Adams for her oil painting titled “At The Bar.”

Gallery hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, and noon to 4 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.
