Ashland University’s Coburn Gallery to Host Summer Art Exhibition

ASHLAND, Ohio – The Coburn Gallery at Ashland University will be hosting a summer art exhibition that will open with a reception on June 27 from 2 to 4 p.m. for the artists Lindsay Scypta, Sandra Holata and Donald R. Miller. Admission to the exhibition is free and the exhibition runs through July 16.

The Brutality Fields is the sixth in a series of installations by Holata and Miller detailing a journey, together and individuals, of truth, hope, despair and redemption.

Cuyahoga Falls based artists and a married couple, Holata and Miller collaborate on site-specific installations that combine Miller's sculpture and drawings with Holata's handmade papers and liquid emulsion photographs. They utilize natural elements, salvaged/recycled objects, and personal items in their work. Both have a profound respect for nature and the culture of fine art.

Scypta was born and raised in Plymouth, Mich., and became interested in ceramics while in high school. She attended New York State Collage of Ceramics at Alfred University, where she completed her BFA in ceramic art. During this time she also spent two summers as an intern at Anderson Ranch Art Center in Snowmass, Colo., where she was able to interact with a large artist community.

Following Alfred, she spent a year at Pennsylvania State University working toward a post-baccalaureate certificate. She now resides in Ashland, Ohio, working at Ashland University as a teaching assistant and at the Creative Chateau as a marketing assistant. She plans to apply for graduate school in the fall of 2011.

All her work is made from porcelaneous clay, thrown, trimmed, altered and decorated, then fired to cone six in an electric oxidation atmosphere. She is still continuing to push her ideas and is excited to incorporate sprig molds, stamping, Mishima incising, slip trailing, and ash glazes to her studio practices.

Ashland University is a mid-sized, private university conveniently located a short distance from Akron, Cleveland and Columbus, Ohio. Ashland University values the individual student and offers a unique educational experience that combines the challenge of strong, applied academic programs with a faculty and staff who build nurturing relationships with their students.
