Ashland University Legacy Program Extended to Include MedCentral Alumni

Ashland University’s nationally recognized Legacy Program, which recruits and recognizes incoming students who are the sons, daughters and grandchildren of Ashland University alumni, is being extended to include a scholarship for children and grandchildren of MedCentral College of Nursing alumni.

“We currently offer a $2,000 Alumnus Award to legacy students and we have decided to extend this award to include legacy students of those who are graduates of the MedCentral College of Nursing,” said Colleen Murphy, vice president for enrollment and marketing. “This is an excellent tool for recruiting students and we are encouraging our MedCentral College of Nursing alumni to now think of recommending their children and grandchildren to Ashland University.”

Murphy said the $2,000 award is renewable each year as long as the student maintains satisfactory academic progress.

Jeff Alix, director of alumni and parent relations at Ashland University, noted that Ashland’s legacy program, which was initiated in the 1980s, is recognized as one of the top programs of its kind in the country.

“We are very excited about extending this program to include the alumni of MedCentral College of Nursing and we look forward to providing these graduates with all the benefits that our alumni receive,” Alix said.

Ashland University acquired the MedCentral Health System’s College of Nursing in August of 2010 and is now planning the construction of a new 45,000-square-foot academic and nursing building on the University’s Balgreen Campus, located at the corner of Marion Avenue and Trimble Road in Mansfield.

MedCentral College of Nursing was founded in 1997 as a private institution of higher education offering programs of study leading to the baccalaureate degree in nursing. The MedCentral College of Nursing, which boasts more than 1,500 nursing alumni, evolved from a hospital-based diploma program that was established in 1919 by Mansfield General Hospital.
