Ashland University Accounting Student Receives Scholarships

Ashland University junior Emily Intagliata, an accounting major, has received both a national and a state scholarship from the Institute of Management Accountants. Intagliata received a $2,500 national scholarship from the Institute of Management Accountants (IMA) for the 2011-12 academic year and a $1,500 scholarship from the Ohio Council of IMA.

Intagliata, a 2008 graduate of Bluffton High School, is the daughter of Karen and Stephen Intagliata of Bluffton.

“I am very honored to be one of the recipients of the IMA National Scholarship and the IMA Ohio Council Scholarship,” Intagliata said. “The IMA has provided me with so many opportunities this year by allowing me to build many professional relationships with accountants throughout the country and further develop my knowledge on a variety of accounting topics.”

Intagliata said the organization has shown her the importance of becoming a certified management accountant.

“Because of this I have registered to take the two-part exam this summer,” she said. “I am very grateful to be receiving these scholarships and plan to continue my involvement with the IMA this next year and after graduation.”

Intagliata received high praise from Dr. Kris Parsons, chair of the Department of Accounting/IS and faculty adviser to the IMA Student Chapter.

“As president of the IMA Student Chapter, Emily has provided leadership that culminated with the chapter receiving the Gold Award of Excellence,” Parsons said. “Her organizational and interpersonal skills will serve her well as she transitions into the professional world.”

Intagliata was presented with the awards at the 37th Annual Meonske Conference at Kent State University on April 28. The presentation was made by Dr. Sandra Richtermeyer, chair of the IMA Global Board.

The longstanding success of this conference has provided the funding for both the student scholarships and support for Ohio students to attend the national IMA student leadership conference. This past November, Intagliata, along with five other students from Ashland University, attended the conference held in Anaheim, Calif.

IMA, the association for accountants and financial professionals in business, provides a forum for research, practice development, education, knowledge sharing and advocacy of the highest ethical and best business practices. IMA provides best-in-class certification, the Certified Management Accountant, for critical internal financial management responsibilities, including planning, budgeting, business reporting, decision analysis and risk management. IMA has a network of more than 60,000 members in 120 countries.
