Ashland University College of Nursing Sponsors Cultural Competencies Conference
The Ashland University Dwight Schar College of Nursing is sponsoring a conference titled “Developing Cultural Competencies: A Life-long Journey for Nurses” to be held Friday, Feb. 17, at 1:30 p.m. in Redwood Hall on the Ashland University campus.
The conference will feature Dr. Sandra J. Mixer, RN, CTN, assistant professor of nursing at the University of Tennessee-Knoxville. The program is sponsored, in part, with funds from a grant provided by the Health Resources and Services Administration, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
“Our HRSA I CARE Teams have worked hard to arrange this conference and we feel it will be beneficial for all,” said Faye Grund, interim dean of the Dwight Schar College of Nursing. “Dr. Mixer will provide an engaging discussion to increase all of our understanding regarding cultural awareness.”
Mixer will speak at 1:30 p.m. on the topic “Transcultural Healthcare: Honoring our Differences – Embracing our Similarities” and will then speak at 2:45 p.m. on the topic “Cultural Assessment: The First Step Toward Cultural Competence.” These afternoon sessions are open to the Ashland University community as well as interested professionals within the region.
Recognized by the Transcultural Nursing Society as a Certified Transcultural Nurse-Advanced and a Transcultural Nursing Scholar, Dr. Mixer is a nationally known transcultural nursing and education expert. Her research, publication, presentation, consultation and service are well known in the nursing community.
As educational consultant for a HRSA cultural competency grant directed by the University of Michigan-Flint, Dr. Mixer has taught nurses, faculty and students throughout the nation in conferences, workshops and webinars. She has served on the Board of Trustees of the Transcultural Nursing Society since 2009 and was re-elected to serve a second term through 2013. She served on the curriculum committee of the Transcultural Nursing Certification Commission for the current transcultural certification exam revision. Dr. Mixer serves associate editor of the Online Journal of Cultural Competence in Nursing and Healthcare.
Mixer teaches undergraduate and graduate courses in leadership, transcultural nursing, nursing theory and community health caring for vulnerable populations in urban and rural settings including cultural immersion experiences in rural Appalachia and Lima, Peru.
Dr. Mixer’s research has focused on teaching culture care, online/distance nursing education, and diverse nursing student success. Her clinical expertise is in palliative/end-of-life care, nursing administration, and perioperative nursing. A theme throughout Dr. Mixer’s career has been mentoring. Dr. Mixer has mentored many master’s and doctoral students in their research. She is currently working with East Tennessee Children’s Hospital in implementing cultural competence and mentoring staff in conducting culture care research at the bedside. Dr. Mixer has contributed to numerous grants related to culture and education and currently has grants under review with the National Institutes of Health and American Cancer Society.
Dr. Mixer earned her Ph.D. in nursing education with Transcultural Nursing Cognate at the University of Northern Colorado; a master’s degree in nursing administration and education from the University of Texas at Arlington, a bachelor of science in nursing from Saginaw Valley State University in Saginaw, Mich., and a diploma from Mercy Central School of Nursing in Grand Rapids, Mich.
Mixer also will present a morning session for interested campus and community professionals in the Ridenour Room located in the Dauch College of Business and Economics. The session, titled “The Culture Care Theory: A Framework for Teaching, Research and Practice,” will start at 8:30 a.m. followed by a 9:45 a.m. session titled “Evidence-Based and Best Practices for Teaching Culture Care.”
