THE YEAR OF THE MOOC (New York Time, November 2, 2012)

In attending the national EDUCAUSE conference this year it was clear that the advent of Massively Open Online Courses has the attention of many higher education institutions. Some see this as just another important delivery channel to expand educational opportunities to students that cannot participate in the traditional four-year degree experience (a more advanced form of the Khan Academy (www.khanacademy.org). Others see this as a fundamental disruptive change to an entrenched marketplace (think how the music industry was changed when media was rendered obsolete by music downloads). Many see this as being a transitory step and what is really important will be what comes after MOOCs. Either way, MOOCs have the attention of many higher education institutions and this article in the NY Times (referenced by EDUCAUSE) provides some current information.
