Ashland University Students Compete in Regional Competition

3/15/13 ASHLAND, Ohio - A group of four Ashland University senior students and their adviser will be traveling to Iowa State University to compete in the North Central Regional Society for Human Resources (SHRM) Student Case Competition.

The Ashland University team of Caitlin Grey of Wadsworth, Carleigh Breneman of Wooster, Mark Bandza of Parma Heights, and Crystal Elliott of Canal Winchester, will be competing against other college teams from a 10-state region on March 22-23. The team’s adviser is Joan Berry Kalamas, professional instructor of business management in the Dauch College of Business and Economics.

The case competition asks students to study, analyze and respond to a complicated human resources situation both with oral summaries and written summaries.

“Teams of between two and six students will compete in two separate divisions -- graduate and undergraduate -- collaborating with their teammates to present the solution to a panel of HR-certified volunteer judges through a 15-minute oral presentation and two-page executive written summary,” Kalamas said.

Kalamas said the prize is a $2,500 award and complimentary registration to SHRM's Annual Conference in Chicago.

Ashland University’s HR Student Chapter is one of approximately 450 SHRM affiliated student chapters across the U.S. Founded in 1948, the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) is the world’s largest association devoted to human resource management. Representing more than 250,000 members in over 140 countries, the Society serves the needs of HR professionals and advances the interests of the HR profession.

SHRM’s Regional Student Conferences provide students with the opportunity to engage, grow and connect through a variety of activities, including networking with HR professionals, exploring potential careers in human resources, and expanding their knowledge of human resource management (HRM) through a series of educational sessions. Conference attendees also participate in a Career Development Fair.

Ashland University, ranked in the top 200 colleges and universities in U.S. News and World Report’s National Universities category for 2013, is a mid-sized, private university conveniently located a short distance from Akron, Cleveland and Columbus, Ohio. Ashland University (www.ashland.edu) values the individual student and offers a unique educational experience that combines the challenge of strong, applied academic programs with a faculty and staff who build nurturing relationships with their students.
